For some, Christmas is the best time of the year. Time spent with family and friends amidst lots of food and laughter is unforgettable. For others, Christmas is full of memories that are not so good because of experiences from the past. For business too, Christmas is a special season. Depending on the industry, Christmas could be either a busy season or a time to shut down for a few days and give time off to staff. As we enjoy this Christmas Season, family and friends will likely surround most of us. The big question is, how can we make the most out of the season both as individuals and as businesses?

As individuals, we have the opportunity this Christmas season to spend time with our loved ones. Let us be intentional about making it quality time. While sharing meals, Christmas is an opportune time to have deep meaningful conversations with each other. These conversations can happen across all ages. We can also choose to celebrate one another’s 2019 milestones this Christmas period. Some have completed a school year, others have graduated, started a new job, joined college, gotten married, have had a child and each one of us has turned a year older. Celebrating each other does not necessarily require money; it could be simply a kind word, a word of appreciation or a simple gesture of gratitude. For many that will be hosting, may the reason for the season be your source of grace.

As businesses, the Christmas season is an opportunity to provide the best experiences to our customers. Most shopping malls, hotels, shops, restaurants and many other business places are likely to experience full capacity during this season. There are also likely to be people visiting these places for the very first time. Unfortunately, and mainly because of lack of prior planning, stocks run out, queues become unmanageable, customers’ requests escape us and customers are ignored. I have come across staff who complain that the customers are too many. This sort of complain indicates that many staff do not recognize the relationship between customers and revenues. The Christmas season presents an opportunity for many businesses especially those in retail to generate additional revenues. Do not miss this excellent opportunity!

Finally, many of us have taken time away from work and businesses. William J. Cameron who achieved fame for his African Big Game / Medical Safari stated that “Christmas is the gentlest, loveliest festival of the revolving year — and yet, for all that, when it speaks, its voice has strong authority”. Let the authority of this Christmas season make a difference. Let us also make it an opportunity to reflect on the year 2019. As we reflect, we need to look at what we did well and what we could do better. We also need to reflect on the coming year and make a few plans that are likely to make next year much better. Wishing all our readers, a joyous Christmas filled with happy memories that will last a lifetime. Make every moment count!
